Work Log/Diary

26th February 2008

I used browser cam yesterday to check the On Ya Bike website to see how it looks in a variety of browsers. I have just about finished with our small site now that I have received the text from Brian, I am just waiting for the images from Maz and it is done. I am thinking of uploading it tomorrow so that everyone in the group can have a look at it before our meeting on friday.

25th February 2008

I am working on the webpages required for ACW4. We have had a couple of team meetings to discuss how we want the page to look and Maz has produced a header image. I have completed the HTML and I am now tweaking the CSS so that the page displays correctly in both IE and Firefox. To acheive the 5 column layout I used the advice of a CSS forum called Dynamic Drive Forum This needed some amendments to work for my design. Brian is producing the promotional text.

For ACW5 I have completed a benchamark exercise on 4 of On Ya Bike's competitors both locally and Nationally. They are one of the few bike shops in Manchester with their own website and I can see many improvements they can make to their site to gain competitive advantage from this. Our group are meeting on friday to produce the slides for our presentation.

26th January 2008

I have completed the validation !!!! It didn't take as long as I feared to strip out the font tags from the pages. I did have a small problem validating 3 pages (Database.asp, output.asp and customers.asp) as they were pulling the customers names from the database and one name had an ampersand (&), I found a solution in the Sams teach yourself ASP book, which inserts the correct encoding into the string before displaying on the webpage. The second problem was no ALT text for the images in images.asp, for this I added some ASP to add the product name to the alt tag when the page was requested from the server.

21st January 2008

I have completed the Netskills Workbooks and have tested that all pages produced work when uploaded to the server. I have produced a page design for the new piece of coursework in Fireworks and will begin to style my pages tomorrow. I have decided on a slightly different look for the new work. I have also changed the link on my Home Page now that the Ninewells Music site I have been working on is live; added to my work log; and added a link from my portfolio to my new coursework. I will also be adding a skip navigation link to my tutorial as per my feedback for the last piece of work.

12th Dec 2007

My site has been online since last friday, when I uploaded it I noticed that the light style header was interfering with my navigation links and in IE the links would not work. I have changed my CSS so that the links work in both IE and Firefox. I have also checked my site works in Safari on a Macbook.

30th Nov 2007

I have produced a new header for my light style page in Fireworks and added it to the CSS. To tidy up the look of the page I have included a new DIV called "access" which is positioned directly above the container DIV making the page look neater.

26th Nov 2007

Today I have been tweaking the layout of my master template, trying to get my tabs working. I made a master page in Dreamweaver and saved this is a template. I spent the morning resizing and optimising all my images ready to include in the templates, the text is ready in a MSWord document. Overall I am happy with the result, if I had more time I would have implemented rounded corners on my tabs but my work load is fairly heavy and I can't commit the time right now.

21st Nov 2007

I have amended my file structure to ensure that only the index page is in the root folder. I have made a mock up of my tutorial design in Adobe Fireworks, have taken photographs whilst making a lasagne and written the text. I am now ready to start writing the master page for the Templates ACW.

17th October 2007

I wanted to add a style switcher to my site as I had used such a dark background for my layout. Whilst testing it I discovered that the tranparent logo which is a PNG with alpha transparency is not supported by IE6. Knowing that there are still a lot of users using older browsers I looked to see if there was a fix and found it here: PNG fix for IE.

9th October 2007

I am trying to finish the site today so that I can concentrate on other work. I have given the 'browse' pages from task 4.2 some simple styling with CSS and linked them to my personal web space.

I remember finding a free alternative to Browser cam in a recent issue of .Net magazine so I will be looking for that later and validating my pages.

29th Sept 2007

Began work on my web site for the 1st piece of assessed coursework. I have tried to go for something a little different for me to test my skills. I have had some experience over the summer writing the xhtml for the Ninewells Music site and wanted to see if I could stretch my imagination to come up with a different layout. I was inspired by an image created with Tierazon.
